How to use the image to svg converter

  1. Add your image. Drop in a PNG, JPG or WebP. Logos, icons, line drawings and flat illustrations give the cleanest results.
  2. Pick the image type. Logo, black and white, illustration or photo each set sensible starting values for colours, smoothness and noise.
  3. Fine-tune. Use fewer colours and more smoothness for a lighter, cleaner file, or more colours for detail. Turn on background removal for a transparent SVG.
  4. Download. Download the SVG or copy the code. SVGO optimisation is on by default, so the file is already small and ready for the web.

What tracing actually does

A PNG or JPG is a grid of pixels, so it blurs or turns blocky when you enlarge it. Tracing groups similar colours into areas, finds the outline of each area and redraws it as smooth curves. The result is an SVG made of shapes, so it stays sharp on a business card or a billboard and you can recolour it in any design app.

Getting a clean result

Start with the largest, sharpest copy of the image you have. Fewer colours mean fewer, simpler shapes: most logos need between two and eight. Raise the speck size to drop stray dots from JPEG compression, and raise smoothness if edges look jagged. Very detailed photos produce huge files, so treat photo mode as a creative poster effect rather than a faithful copy.

Private by design

Many online vectorisers upload your logo to their server, and some keep it. Refract traces the image in your browser using a background worker, so the file never leaves your device and there’s no limit on how many you convert.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a JPG logo to SVG for free?

Yes. Drop it in, choose Logo or Black and white, and download the SVG. There’s no sign-up, watermark or daily limit.

Why does my SVG look slightly different from the original?

Tracing simplifies the image into a set number of colours and smooth curves. Increase the colours, lower the smoothness or choose Fine detail to stay closer to the original.

Can I make the background transparent?

Turn on “Remove the background colour”. Refract removes the colour found in the corners of your image, which is usually the background.

Will this work in Figma, Illustrator or Cricut?

Yes. The download is a standard SVG made of filled paths, so it opens in Figma, Illustrator, Inkscape, Canva and cutting machine software.
